I didn’t used to consider myself a frugal mom, but this Christmas season I’ve decided that I actually am! Perhaps not with everything on my shopping list, but for the most part I scour the best deals when shopping and can end up saving myself a lot of money! I have also never considered myself much of a DIY person, but if I can let you in on a little confession, with certain things – I’m just loving it! Here’s a really easy and affordable DIY sugar scrub you can make and it’s really easy to adapt to different holidays. For Christmas I’ve chosen a “Candy Cane” sugar scrub by adding red food coloring and peppermint extract. This is what you’ll need:
- White sugar
- Coconut oil
- Red food coloring
- Peppermint essential oil or peppermint extract
- Glass jars
- Ribbon & cardstock for decorating the jars
Melt your coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl if you prefer for easier mixing. Then add your peppermint oil or extract and stir. Add in the sugar and mix well! You can add more (or less the next time!) depending on the texture you prefer. Divide 1/2 of the sugar mixture into another bowl and add your red food coloring into one of the bowls and mix. You only need a few drops and it’s more pink than red.
Then you alternate your colors and layer in the jar. I found that this recipe was the perfect amount for three 330ml glass jars. I also made some free printable gift tags that you can use and then just attach with ribbon – easy!
- 4 cups white sugar
- 1 cup coconut oil, melted
- Red food coloring
- Peppermint essential oil or peppermint extract
- Small glass jars (I used 330 ml)
- Pour sugar into medium sized bowl.
- Melt coconut oil in microwave if yours is not liquified and mix with sugar (you can use more or less depending on consistency you want).
- Add a few drops of your peppermint oil or 1 tbsp peppermint extract, depending on how strong you want it to smell.
- Divide your sugar mixture into two equal sized portions.
- Mix in a few drops of red food coloring to one portion and leave the other white.
- Add your sugars to the jar in layers.
- Using the heel of your hand on the bottom of the jar, you can compact each layer down so it can fit more of the scrub in if you need.
- Alternate between your pink and white layers.
OMG!!! I LOVE this, Sarah!!! Such an awesome idea! Totally doing this! xo
Thanks, Christine! I’ve gotten great feedback from it and a lot of friends have done it and posted pics for me to see! I’ve been using mine and it’s divine and leaves a nice, soft feeling after too.
This looks fantastic! Great idea, especially for my teen. Thanks for sharing!
You’re very welcome!!
Such an amazing idea! I wish I had seen this sooner. I think I may attempt to make these for the teachers next year. In the meantime I will experiment on my own 😉 thank you!
This is a perfect idea! I would gift this all year round – scrubs are my favourite thing to have in the house.
I really love this Sarah. I think I’ll try making a batch!
