Summer is almost finally here (well for the most part since the evenings have been so cold!). It is time to get out and enjoy backyard patio parties with family and friends. I love to relax and enjoy a day on the patio with my family, with a fruity alcoholic beverage in hand (you know the type that just screams summertime, enjoy me!). The only downfall with this is the amount of calories that are in these drinks, not to mention the patio snacks!
I like to fight the extra intake of calories with a delicious glass of sangria. Sangria is a mixture of wine (red or white) with a combination of carbonated water and fruit. The best part of sangria, is that you can never really go wrong.
For a lower calorie, aspartame free (if you don’t mind the aspartame, grab any zero calorie carbonated water in the beverage aisle) sangria, mix your favourite bottle of wine with Perrier and add fruit. Not only does this provide less calories but you make your wine last that much longer (bonus!).
For my special low calorie Sangria you will need:
- 750 mL bottle of Jackson Triggs Merlot (you will only need about 1/2 of the bottle)
- 3/4 of a 1L Perrier Lemon Orange carbonated water
- one lime
- one lemon
- seven strawberries
- handful of raspberries
- one medium orange
- ice
Cut your fresh fruit into circles (for the lemon, lime), triangles for the oranges and slices for the strawberries.
Add the fruit to a tall container.
Pour in 1/2 the bottle of Jackson Triggs Merlot. Allow the fruit to absorb some of the wine.
Pour in 3/4 of the bottle of Perrier.
Add the ice and put your bottle in the fridge to chill for at least two hours.
Serve your drink with a slice of lemon and voila! A perfect, low calorie patio drink.
