Sunday Family Dinner Night – Cooking Together As A Family – Easy Homemade Grilled Pizza Recipe

Making dinner together is something that I love doing with Anthony.  He is always in my kitchen cooking, and one of his favorites is making pizza.  This recipe is SO MUCH FUN to make with kids!  They can do almost every single step, and the results are always delicious, and kids are always happy to be able to help with dinner and make their very own pizza.

This summer has been crazy busy and sooooo hot!  We don’t have A/C, so most of our cooking has been out on the grill,  if you can’t tell from the recipes that I am sharing.  Anyhow, our neighbor Rick’s son has been hanging out with me and Anthony this summer.  We’ve done all sorts of fun things, like going to the splash park, going Pokémon hunting, and one of my favorites – making our own pizza!

Making pizza at home is so much fun.  We usually make pizza in the oven, but I wanted to get the heat out of the kitchen – so what the heck… Grilled Pizza!!

Our day started early by starting to make our pizza dough.  We made two recipes worth of pizza dough so that the boys could each make their own.  I probably should have split the recipe in half butttttt we LOVE pizza, and calzones, and stromboli… so it definitely wouldn’t go to waste and I didn’t mind having a little more on hand!

Pizza Dough is a great recipe to make with kids.  It’s easy to make, the ingredients aren’t expensive and it’s a fun experience for everyone.  The boys worked together to measure out the water, add the yeast and sugar to watch the magic happen, and then slowly add the flour to make dough.  They kneaded the dough, in competition with each other as to who’s pizza dough was smoother, and then let it rest and rise.  The boys were checking every 30 minutes to see the progress.

As the dough was rising, we made the sauce.  The boys went outside and trimmed the fresh basil and parsley from the garden, and then they raided my fridge and pantry to find the ingredients.  We used tomato sauce, garlic, basil, parsley and some parmesan cheese.  They did a great job, working together making it.  We finished the sauce and it was lunch time. And then before we knew it, DJ was home, and Rick came upstairs for dinner.

Now, this was my absolute FAVORITE part of the night… Making dinner together – all 5 of us.  I put all of the ingredients; dough, sauce, mozzarella cheese, parmesan cheese, basil, pepperoni, Italian sausage, and peppers.  DJ, Anthony, Rick and Noah all worked together to stretch the dough, and get their dough ready for the grill.  After it got it’s first quick cook on the grill, we brought the ingredients outside, and made our pizzas, and then back on the grill to finish cooking.  Watching them work together side by side, father and son, just melted my heart.

Pizza is one of our favorites, and it’s a great thing to make together.  Make your pizza and pop in a movie, and make it a fun family night!

1 recipe homemade pizza dough
1/8 cup olive oil

For the sauce:
1, 28 oz tomato sauce
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp garlic
1 tbsp each fresh basil and parsley
2 tsp salt
1 tsp black pepper
1/8 cup finely grated parmesan cheese
dash red pepper flakes

Toppings:
mozzarella cheese
parmesan cheese
pepperoni
Italian sausage
mushroom
peppers
basil
tomatoes
feta cheese

Directions:

2-6 (preferably 6) hours before dinner, start making pizza dough.  This can be done the night before too.

In a small pot over medium-high heat, heat olive oil until shimmering.  Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds.  Add tomato sauce, and reduce heat to low.  Stir in parmesan cheese, salt, pepper, basil and parsley.  Let simmer 10-30 minutes.  Set aside.  Gather your toppings and set aside while the sauce is cooking.

Preheat grill to high.

Divide dough up among each person, or in half for larger pizzas on a lightly floured surface stretch each dough piece to form ovals.  Lightly brush each piece if dough with olive oil, and place on a baking sheet the grill, oiled side down.

Remove from grill, and top with your favorite toppings.  Slide pizza back on to the grill, close the lid and cook for another 2 minutes, until the cheese is melted.  Slide pizza off of sheet tray directly to the grill for 1 more minute.  Remove from grill to a cooling rack and let cool 3 minutes before slicing.
