I’m down for chocolate covered anything and these cute and easy Halloween Inspired Chocolate Covered Strawberries are no exception.
As a kid almost everything that I ate at my Grandma’s house was covered in chocolate. To be honest, I’m not sure I remember a time being at my Grandma’s and not having some sort of chocolate, or chocolate-dipped something, and that is where the inspiration for these Halloween Chocolate Covered Strawberries came from – my Nan. Well that, and the fact that my local Sprouts has 1 lb containers of strawberries on sale for $1 each!
Like I said, if it could be dipped in chocolate, she dipped it in chocolate, and every weekend I spent at her house, I remember eating copious amounts of melted chocolate as Nan and I made stuff together. We even made chocolate lollipops. Everything! Her love of chocolate came from the chocolate shop, Laura Secord that she and then myself as I got older, worked at for many, many years. There was always chocolate around – even on her death bed, my Grandma made my Bobby (what I call my Grandpa) bring in some of the chocolate she had in her stash at home, and she would force the nurses to eat some chocolate!
Dipping anything in chocolate is easy. The biggest trick you have to remember is NEVER GET WATER IN YOUR CHOCOLATE. I write this in caps because it is VERY important. Water when mixed with the chocolate will cause it to separate, and then turn white and crackly as it dries – not silky and smooth like it should be. If you need to smooth out your chocolate at all, I suggest a tiny amount – maybe 1/2 tsp of coconut oil mixed into the melted chocolate. It is also very important not to over melt the chocolate, which is why a double boiler works best – but Nan always melted her chocolate in the microwave, and that is the way I have done it in the instructions below.
To make these Halloween Chocolate Covered Strawberries so festive, I used some Halloween sprinkles and also used a paint brush (like Nan did), and painted on some of the details. Get as creative with the decorating as you want – Pinterest has some really great ideas!
strawberries, washed and picked over – look for large, firm berries with long stems – these work best for dipping
1/2 lb milk, dark or white chocolate wafers (we used mostly white and a little milk chocolate) – you can find these in the baking aisle of your grocery store
coconut oil, optional and not always required
Place a sheet of wax or parchment paper on a cookie sheet and set aside.
Place chocolate wafers in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave on low for 30 seconds at a time, stirring in between until melted. While chocolate is melting, pour sprinkles in a small bowl and set aside.
Hold strawberry by stem, and carefully dip into melted chocolate, being sure to cover all sides. Remove from chocolate, and slowly turn, allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Place chocolate covered strawberry on prepared cookie sheet, and allow to cool completely.
Once strawberries are dried, melt some more chocolate and decorate as you wish.
If you’re going to dip the berries in sprinkles, immediately dip chocolate covered strawberry in prepared sprinkle bowl, being sure to cover all sides. Place sprinkle coved strawberry on prepared cookie sheet and allow to cool completely.
If you want to change the color of your chocolate, to make orange or green chocolate covered strawberries, start by adding 1-2 drops of food coloring gel with the chocolate wafers before melting. Alternatively, and this is what my grandma did, is either at your local grocery store, or Walmart and definitely at Michael’s or Joann’s, you can buy already colored chocolate wafers. Melt these according to directions above, and decorate.
